This was fun to make.
Cameron and I rode bikes to the Book Stall on Ebenezer. It was a shack filled to the ceiling with books. At least I remember them going to the ceiling. Crammed in the back corner was a little old lady eating a frozen dinner and watching Family Feud I think. I found a hardcover book that was the right size and bought it for $3. It happened to be a book on meditation for teenagers that was written in the 50s. I ripped out the pages and screenwashed the title off the front and spine. Then took a really long piece of paper and screenprinted "this" on it. And on the cover too. Folded it into pages, pasted the first and last page on to the covers and then recorded overheard phrases around the word "this." It turned into a book about communication and decontextualizing conversation. Each phrase is about a subject...the "this" in the statement. Yet when we read it removed from the context, it is no longer understandable, or meaningful, just words on the page. But, at least they're entertaining to read. You can interpert the meaning behind that meaning however you like. It's on display right now at the Winthrop University Printmaking, Drawing, and Mixed Media Show...along with my egg screenprint.
